This Black Seven Sorrows Rosary is a powerful devotional tool for reflecting on the deep sorrows endured by the Blessed Virgin Mary. Each of the seven medals replacing the Our Father beads features a detailed image of Our Lady on the front, while the reverse depicts one of her seven sorrows. Traditionally used to meditate on Mary’s profound grief and suffering, this rosary serves as a means of deepening one’s compassion and understanding of Christ's passion through His mother’s eyes.
The seven sorrows of Mary are:
The Prophecy of Simeon – This sorrow recalls when Simeon, at the presentation of Jesus in the temple, foretold the suffering Mary would endure, predicting that a sword would pierce her heart.
The Flight into Egypt – In this sorrow, we meditate on the Holy Family’s escape to Egypt after King Herod sought to kill the infant Jesus, and the pain Mary felt fleeing her homeland to protect her son.
The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple – This sorrow commemorates when Jesus went missing for three days, and the deep distress Mary experienced until He was found teaching in the temple.
Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to Calvary – Here, we reflect on the sorrowful moment when Mary saw her beloved son carrying the cross, bloodied and suffering, on His way to His crucifixion.
The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus – This sorrow focuses on Mary’s unimaginable grief as she stood by the cross and witnessed the agonising death of her son, Jesus.
The Body of Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross – We contemplate the heartache Mary endured as she held the lifeless body of her son after His crucifixion, mourning her loss.
The Burial of Jesus – This sorrow reflects on the final farewell as Mary watched her son’s body being laid in the tomb, feeling the immense sorrow of parting from Him in death.
This rosary offers a deep, spiritual journey, reminding us of Mary’s unwavering faith amidst suffering, while encouraging devotion and prayer to seek her intercession in our own sorrows.
